ISLAMABAD (June 12 2008): The
Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has raised customs duty on
import of around 300 non-essential and luxury items in 15 percent,
20 percent and 25 percent slabs of import duty to higher slabs of
30 percent and 35 percent respectively.
According to Pakistan Customs Tariff
(PCT) 2008-09, customs duty @ Rs 500/ per set has been levied on
import of mobile phone. Duty rate on import of cars/jeeps above
1800cc has been increased from 90 percent to 100 percent. Fixed
duty/tax rates on old and used cars/jeeps has been increased by 10
percent.
Duty rates on
DAIRY products, fruits,
chewing gum,
chocolate, processed food, fruit juices, aerated waters, ceramic
products, air-conditioners/refrigerators, electric fans, toasters,
microwave ovens,
televisions, including liquid crystal display, other, black and
white or other monochrome, furniture and lighting equipment etc
has been increased from 25 percent to 35 percent.
Duty rates on cosmetics have been
increased from 20-25 percent to 35 percent. Cosmetics liable to 35
percent customs duty include scent sprays and similar toilet
sprays, and mounts and heads therefor; powder-puffs and pads for
the application of cosmetics or toilet preparations. It also
includes scent sprays and similar toilet sprays, and mounts and
heads therefor.
Duty rate on electric ovens/cooking
ranges etc has been increased from 20 percent to 30 percent. It
includes cooking appliances and plate warmers for gas fuel or for
both gas and other fuels.
Customs duty on betel leaves has been
increased from Rs 150/kg to Rs 200/kg, and duty rate on sulphonic
acid has been increased from 10 percent to 15 percent.
The duty rate has been increased on
CKD/SKD of sewing machines from 5 percent to 20 percent, whereas a
uniform rate of 30 percent has been specified for import of
special purpose motor vehicles.
Generally, duty has been raised on
import of perfumery, cosmetics, crockery, ceramics, bath room
fittings, kitchen utensils, furniture, sporting arms and domestic
appliances such as air conditioners, refrigerators, deep freezer,
cooking range, ovens and other such equipment. The list also
includes confectionery items like biscuits, chocolates and
cookies, besides cigarettes, cigars and some food preparations.
Thirty-five percent duty would be
applicable on import of soap; organic surface-active products and
preparations for use as soap, in the form of bars, cakes, moulded
pieces or shapes, whether or not containing soap; organic
surfaceactive products and preparations for washing the skin, in
the form of liquid or cream and put up for retail sale, whether or
not containing soap; paper, wadding, felt and non-wovens,
impregnated, coated or covered with soap or detergent.
The 35 percent duty rate would be
applicable on import of soap and organic surface-active products
and preparations, in the form of bars, cakes, moulded pieces or
shapes, and paper, wadding, felt and nonwovens, impregnated,
coated or covered with soap or detergent for toilet use (including
medicated products); soap in other forms; organic surface-active
products and preparations for washing the skin, in the form of
liquid or cream and put up for retail sale, whether or not
containing soap.
Following kinds of furniture would be
liable to 35 percent customs duty: Metal furniture of a kind used
in offices; other metal furniture; wooden furniture of a kind used
in offices; wooden furniture of a kind used in the kitchen; wooden
furniture of a kind used in the bedroom; wooden cabinets; wooden
beds; furniture of plastics; furniture of other materials,
including cane, osier, bamboo or similar materials.
